Medium and Heavy Duty Truck Sales Strong In January
Surging medium and heavy-duty truck sales in early 2017 may suggest a banner year to come in those categories. According to ACT Research, Class 5-8 truck sales for January 2017 were very strong.
Strong Double-digit Increases
In fact, the 45,300 units sold represent a hefty 27-percent improvement over January 2016. Of those, about 22,000 units were Class 8 trucks, and the remainder were Class 5-7 trucks. The approximately 23,000 Class 5-7 units sold represent a solid 32-percent increase over February 2016.
In hitting one-year highs, January Class 5-8 truck sales accomplished something that is quite unusual - exceeding the sales figures for each of the fourth quarter months of October, November and December.
Some of this increase is attributed to growing fleet confidence in market conditions. With orders pouring in, a number of manufacturers may see more February builds than at any time in the latter part of 2016.
Class 5-7 orders hit an 11-month high in January with 23,000 units, rising 32-percent year-over-year according to ACT Research.
Best Seasonally Adjusted Rate Since 2008
Since orders in the early part of the year are usually relatively weak, the seasonally adjusted figures underscore market strength. ACT Research calculates a seasonally adjusted January net order volume of more than 24,450 Class 5-7 units. This is the highest adjusted monthly sales volume in nine years.
